Central Virginia's Home for Futsal Since 2007
Founded in 2007, FutsalRVA has grown into one of the most established youth futsal programs in the country — sanctioned by US Soccer and United States Youth Futsal.
HISTORY
Founded in 2007 by Greg Simmonds and Joe Farrell, FutsalRVA has grown from a local futsal program into one of the most established youth futsal organizations in the region.
From the beginning, the goal has been simple: create an environment where players can learn the game, compete, and continue developing through futsal.
Over the years, FutsalRVA has played an important role in the growth of the sport in Virginia and across the Mid-Atlantic. In 2010, FutsalRVA was selected as one of eight organizations to host the first Mid-Atlantic Regional Futsal Tournament, welcoming 32 teams. By 2019, the event had grown to more than 120 teams, while the FutsalRVA Winter League had expanded to more than 210 teams and over 2,000 players.
That growth also helped shape the FutsalRVA Academy. What started as a year-round training environment continued to evolve into a structured development model that ultimately helped serve as the foundation for the National Academy Program within U.S. Youth Futsal (USYF). That model has since been used by academies across the country to help develop players and grow the game of futsal in the United States.
Today, FutsalRVA provides opportunities for players across multiple ages and levels, from young players beginning their futsal journey to competitive teams participating in regional and national events.
Our Academy combines technical development, tactical understanding, decision-making, creativity, and competition. Players are placed in developmentally appropriate environments where they can be challenged while continuing to build confidence and understanding of the game.
FutsalRVA also continues to provide leagues, tournaments, festivals, and competitive events for the broader soccer and futsal community. In 2026, the inaugural Joe Farrell Classic was created in honor of FutsalRVA co-founder Joe Farrell, bringing 80 teams together at the Henrico Sports & Events Center for a weekend of competitive futsal.
While the program has continued to grow, our purpose remains the same.
DEVELOPMENT COMES FIRST
We believe futsal should challenge players to think faster, become more comfortable with the ball, solve problems, compete, and express themselves in the game. At the same time, we believe the environment around the player matters just as much. Sportsmanship, respect, discipline, hard work, and enjoyment continue to be an important part of the FutsalRVA experience.
FutsalRVA is open to players regardless of club, level, or hometown affiliation. We want players from across the community to have the opportunity to experience the game, develop through it, and become part of a community connected by a shared love of futsal.
WE ARE FUTSALRVA
Built Around Player Development
FutsalRVA is Central Virginia's only US Soccer sanctioned Futsal League, serving youth, academy, and adult players. Since our founding, we've focused on promoting and educating the sport of futsal through structured training programs, leagues, and tournaments.
Our Academy, League, and tournaments field teams in every age group and gender, from U8 through high school. High-quality officiating, fair and balanced competition, and strong facilities have kept coaches, players, and families coming back year after year.
FutsalRVA has been selected to host USYF Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships — recognition of the strength of our facilities, our experienced referees, and our organizational track record.
Why Futsal Builds Better Players
Futsal is played in every region of the world, in over 100 countries, by more than 12 million players. It's recognized as one of the most effective tools for developing quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pinpoint passing.
Played on a hard surface with boundary lines and a low-bounce ball, futsal compresses the game into tighter spaces — forcing faster decisions and more frequent touches on the ball than a full-sided outdoor match.
- Eliminates complicated rules like offside that can get in the way of kids simply playing
- Lets coaches guide the game instead of constantly directing it — teaching tactical habits that carry straight into outdoor soccer
- Easy to pick up, even for coaches who are brand new to it — the smaller space and simpler rules make it easier to teach and easier to learn
FutsalRVA is affiliated with US Soccer and sanctioned by United States Youth Futsal — see our full list of affiliations and partners on the Home page.
